The St. Joseph’s Varsity Boys Wrestling Team hosted their first home meet of the season this past Friday night against Landrum and Christ Church. While the Knights lost a tough match against Landrum, the team pulled off a win against Christ Church.

“Losing to Landrum was disappointing,” stated sophomore Team Captain Nadir Dbouk, “but we will see them again later in the season and we know what we have to do to win.”

In spite of the loss, the match marked a huge milestone for some of the wrestlers, according to Coach Matt Vinson.

“Cameron Cummings, Patrick Hamod, and Phillip Key have struggled some this year, yet they all posted wins against one of the toughest teams we will see all season,” stated Vinson. “I say all the time how hard this team works, and it continues to be true.”

The middle school team also competed this past week, traveling to Byrnes High School on Saturday for a qualifying tournament. Eighth grader Jeffery Fann and seventh grader Luke Bikulege both qualified for the state tournament in Lexington.

“Our middle school guys represent a great group of boys and most of them are first year wrestlers,” added Coach Vinson. “Even though they didn’t qualify this weekend, Trey Lagaly, Nathan Petrofes, Josiah Tennent, and Jack Valente all made it to the finals of their bracket. That is a huge accomplishment considering they wrestled against 1A-4A teams. These guys represent the future of this program, and it looks very bright.”
